📅 Building Stronger Communities – Saturday 27 June 2026

Technology has transformed almost every aspect of our lives, and shopping is no exception. From online ordering and click and collect to self-service checkouts and home delivery, convenience has never been greater.

But as our shopping habits evolve, what does that mean for our communities?

This week on Building Stronger Communities, we explored how retail has changed over the decades and asked whether we’re simply changing the way we shop—or changing the way we connect.

🕰️ A Walk Down Memory Lane

Host Michelle Hillier reflected on growing up in Blacktown, remembering Saturday mornings at Franklin’s with her mum, filling out a paper lottery ticket, and her very first job at the Darrell Lea store in Westpoint Blacktown.

Shopping wasn’t simply about buying groceries or chocolate. It was about family routines, seeing familiar faces and feeling connected to the local community.

While today’s technology has made life more convenient, those memories remind us of the important role shopping centres and local businesses have played in bringing people together.

🏙️ Communities Continue to Evolve

The program explored how town centres are changing as more Australians embrace online shopping.

Rather than seeing this as the decline of traditional retail, we looked at how many communities are reinventing themselves through cafés, dining precincts, food truck festivals, entertainment, libraries and public spaces where people can gather and connect.

Michelle also shared her visit to Blacktown Library, reflecting on how modern libraries have become welcoming community hubs that offer much more than books. They provide places to learn, create, meet others and simply spend time—without needing to spend money.

đź’Ľ New Jobs for a Changing Workforce

As industries evolve, so do employment opportunities.

The program highlighted Endeavour Energy’s 2027 apprenticeship intake closing July 3rd, providing local opportunities for young people to build rewarding careers close to home across Greater Western Sydney.

We also discussed the importance of apprenticeships, vocational education and emerging industries that are creating exciting new pathways for the next generation.

Key message: Jobs aren’t simply disappearing—they’re evolving.

⚡ Interview Spotlight – IgnitED and the Jobs of Tomorrow

A highlight of this week’s program was our conversation with Anthea Middleton, CEO of Powering Skills Organisation.

Anthea shared how Australia’s energy sector is creating exciting new career opportunities as the industry continues to evolve. We discussed the importance of apprenticeships, vocational education, industry collaboration and ensuring today’s workforce has the skills needed for tomorrow’s jobs.

Our conversation explored:

  • ⚡ Emerging careers in the energy sector.
  • 🎓 Apprenticeship and vocational education pathways.
  • 🌏 Opportunities for school leavers and career changers.
  • 🤝 How industry and education are working together to prepare Australia’s future workforce.
  • 🚀 The IgnitED initiative, showcasing innovation, practical ideas and workforce capability across the energy sector.

🧠 Brain Energy

This week’s Brain Energy segment featured the inspiring story of Betty, whose creativity has become both a source of purpose and a gift to others.

Her story highlighted three powerful wellbeing principles:

  • 🎯 Purpose – Creating something meaningful.
  • 🎨 Creativity – Using creative activities to support mental wellbeing.
  • 🤝 Contribution – Helping others rather than focusing solely on our own struggles.

Betty reminded us that improving our wellbeing doesn’t always require major life changes. Sometimes it begins by rediscovering something we love and sharing it with others. If you would like to connect with Betty regarding her creative skills, you supply the materials and her time is a gift to you check out her Facebook page Betty Pani or maremare_creates on TikTok.

🌿 Switch Off and Connect

This week’s challenge encouraged listeners to:

📍 Visit somewhere different in your local community.

Whether it’s a local shopping strip, cafĂ©, weekend market or community library, take the opportunity to slow down and reconnect.

Then ask someone this simple question:

đź’¬ “What’s your favourite memory of shopping when you were growing up?”

Those conversations preserve local history, connect generations and remind us that every community has stories worth sharing.

❤️ Our Takeaway

Technology will continue to change the way we live, work and shop.

Industries will continue to evolve.

New careers will emerge.

But one thing should never change.

Our need for connection.

Whether we’re supporting a local business, chatting while collecting groceries, visiting the library, exploring a new career pathway or sharing stories with family, it’s those everyday moments that build stronger communities.
