🌱 Building Stronger Communities – Saturday 18 July 2026

Life can change for any one of us in an instant.
Illness, job loss, family breakdown, grief, trauma, financial hardship or unexpected challenges don’t discriminate. At different times in our lives, any of us may find ourselves needing a helping hand.
Often, the difference between simply surviving and beginning to thrive is having the right support, connection and opportunity at the right time.
In this episode of Building Stronger Communities, we explore the people, organisations and everyday conversations that can help someone find hope, rebuild confidence and begin moving forward.
Because strong communities aren’t communities where nobody struggles.
They’re communities where people don’t have to struggle alone.
🤝 Support Can Create Opportunity

Before coming to community radio, host Michelle Hillier spent time working alongside people experiencing some of life’s toughest challenges.
One experience that left a lasting impression was supporting women and children facing significant mental health challenges alongside trauma, homelessness, family violence, isolation and fear.
What became clear was that support isn’t only something we provide when someone reaches crisis.
Support can create the opportunity for someone to rebuild.
With safe accommodation, professional assistance, practical help and people who believed in them without judgement, Michelle witnessed women slowly rebuild confidence, strengthen relationships with their children and begin looking towards the future with hope.
It reinforced an important lesson:
When communities invest in support, we don’t just help people through today — we can help change what tomorrow looks like.
Sometimes support comes from a professional service.
Sometimes it comes from a community organisation, family member, neighbour or volunteer.
And sometimes it begins with something as simple as one person taking the time to listen without judgement.
🏘️ Community Support in Action – Blacktown Area Community Centres
BACC is a not-for-profit community serving the suburbs in the Blacktown LGA. BACC envisages an empowered community that is well-resourced, inclusive, diverse and safe.
Strong communities aren’t built by one person or one organisation.
They’re built when people work together, share knowledge, create connections and make sure people know where they can turn when life becomes difficult.
In this episode, Michelle speaks with Jamie Mac from Blacktown Area Community Centres (BACC) about the important role community organisations play in supporting individuals and families across Western Sydney.
With more than two decades of experience across community services, Jamie shares insights into the challenges people can face and how timely, practical and compassionate support can help create pathways forward.
The conversation also explores BACC’s Surviving to Thriving program, including who the program is designed to support and how creating the right environment and opportunities can help people move beyond simply getting through each day.

💡 Knowledge is Power – Mental Health First Aid
Most of us understand the idea of physical first aid.
If someone is injured or becomes unwell, we provide appropriate help, call for assistance and stay with them until further support arrives.
Mental Health First Aid works on a similar principle.
It isn’t about becoming a psychologist, counsellor or clinician.
It’s about learning how to:
🧠 recognise signs that someone may be experiencing a mental health challenge
💬 start a supportive conversation
👂 listen without judgement
🤝 respond with confidence and compassion
🧭 encourage someone towards appropriate professional support when needed
Many people experiencing difficulties don’t immediately ask for help. They may fear judgement, feel unsure where to turn or simply not know how to begin the conversation.
Sometimes a simple question can make a difference:
“Are you okay? I’ve noticed you don’t seem yourself lately.”
We don’t need to have all the answers.
Sometimes we simply need to notice, listen and help someone take the next step.

🧠 Brain Energy with Luke Evans – Understanding Surviving and Thriving
What does it actually mean to be in survival mode?
And does thriving mean that life is always going well?
In this week’s Brain Energy, Luke Evans explores surviving and thriving as natural states of the body and mind.
Luke explains why thriving isn’t about avoiding difficult times. Instead, resilience can involve our ability to move between different states and recognise what our body and mind may be telling us.
Importantly, feeling stuck in survival isn’t necessarily failure.
It can be information.
Luke also shares a simple practical breathing skill that can help bring the body towards calm, creating space to think more clearly and choose how to respond rather than automatically reacting.

⭐ Community Champion – Linda Stenning

Sometimes the people making a difference in our communities aren’t doing it through a formal organisation or professional role.
They’re simply people who understand what it can mean to have someone beside you during a difficult time.
This week’s Community Champion is Linda Stenning.
Linda has faced significant challenges throughout her life, including the impacts of domestic and family violence and many years of living with anxiety and depression.
After losing two people close to her through suicide, Linda chose to use her lived experience to connect with and support others.
Today, you may see Linda walking through the community wearing a T-shirt carrying a simple but powerful message:
💛 “You Matter.”
It’s more than a message on a shirt.
It’s a conversation starter.
Through local community groups, everyday encounters and genuine conversations, Linda encourages people to connect and reminds others that sometimes simply asking someone how they are — and genuinely wanting to hear the answer — can matter.
Linda is not a mental health professional, counsellor or clinician. She is a peer support advocate who believes lived experience, compassion and human connection can play an important role alongside appropriate professional support.

📣 Connecting Our Community
Knowing what is happening in our own neighbourhoods can be one of the simplest ways to become more connected.
Our Community Announcements share free local events, activities and opportunities that help people discover what’s happening across Western Sydney.
Whether it’s a community event, family activity, cultural celebration, workshop or local initiative, sometimes getting involved starts simply by knowing what opportunities are available.
We welcomed Siv, a member of the SWR community, who will be becoming a regular voice on Building Stronger Communities.
Siv will be helping us keep Western Sydney connected by sharing free community events, activities and opportunities happening across our local council areas.
It’s another way BSC is creating space for different voices from within our community to contribute, connect and help people discover what’s happening around them.
Welcome to the BSC team, Siv! 🎧💙

🔌 Switch Off & Connect – This Week’s Challenge
This week, we’re asking you to do something simple.
☕ Reach out to someone who may be feeling isolated.
Invite them for a coffee.
🚶 Go for a walk together.
📞 Make a phone call.
💬 Or simply sit down and have a genuine conversation.
We sometimes think making a difference in someone’s life requires a grand gesture.
Often, it doesn’t.
The greatest gift we can give another person may simply be our time and genuine attention.
One hour of connection can remind someone that they are seen, valued and don’t have to face life’s challenges alone.
💭 Who could you make time for this week?
❤️ Stronger Communities Start with Connection
One message connected every conversation in this episode:
None of us knows what tomorrow may bring.
At some point, any one of us may need support.
What matters is that when someone reaches that point, there is a person, service or community willing to see beyond the difficult chapter they are experiencing and recognise the potential for what comes next.
Moving from surviving to thriving rarely happens because of one big moment.
It can begin with:
🤝 one person offering support
💬 one meaningful conversation
🏡 one safe place
🧭 one connection to the right service
🌱 one opportunity
❤️ one person who believes things can get better
When we create those opportunities, we don’t just strengthen individuals.
We strengthen families, neighbourhoods and entire communities.
Because everyone has a place — and every story matters.
Next Week on Building Stronger Communities
