Connection, Reflection & Community
On Saturday 25th April, Building Stronger Communities came together for a very special broadcast — a moment to pause, reflect, and honour ANZAC Day.
This episode wasn’t about history alone.
It was about people.
Connection.
And how the ANZAC spirit continues to live on in our everyday lives.
A Moment to Reflect
We opened the show with “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” — a powerful reminder of the human side of war and the lasting impact it has on those who serve and their families.
As we reflected on 111 years since Gallipoli, the conversation turned to something deeper:
👉 How does ANZAC Day change for us as we get older?
For many of us, it begins as something we learn at school.
But over time, it becomes more personal.
We start to understand:
- The weight behind the stories
- The meaning behind the sacrifice
- And the importance of looking out for one another
Because ANZAC Day isn’t just about remembering…
It’s about how we carry that spirit forward.
💬 A Youth Perspective: Meet Piper Johnson
A highlight of the morning was welcoming Piper Johnson into the studio — a passionate 16-year-old making a real difference in her community.
Piper shared her journey:
- Ambassador for Fortem Australia, supporting first responder families
- Youth Parliamentarian advocating for student wellbeing
- Recipient of Youth Change Maker of the Year
Her story was a powerful reminder that community isn’t built by age — it’s built by action.
🧠 The Power of Everyday Connection
Throughout the episode, one message kept coming through:
Connection doesn’t need to be complicated.
It can be:
- Checking in on a friend
- Sitting with someone who’s having a tough time
- Sharing a moment of laughter
- Or simply being present
Because often, it’s the small moments that make the biggest difference.
🔄 Switch Off & Connect: Bringing Back Simple Joy
This week’s Switch Off & Connect activity tapped into something many of us remember from childhood:
👉 Classic community games
From the listener poll, favourites included:
- Egg and spoon races
- Sack races
- Tug of war
What stood out wasn’t just the games —
it was the realisation that we’ve stopped doing them.
And maybe… it’s time to bring them back.
Not for perfection.
Not for performance.
But for:
- Movement
- Laughter
- And shared moments
Because that’s where connection lives.
🎙️ Now vs Then – Questions with Piper
This week on Switch Off & Connect, we explored a simple idea with Piper:
👉 How different — or similar — are our experiences across generations?
We asked Piper these 5 questions: you can find them here
📍 What’s On in Our Community
If this episode reminded us of anything, it’s this:
👉 Getting out into your community matters.
Across Greater Western Sydney, there’s plenty happening:
- Local council events and festivals
- Community workshops and activities
- Opportunities to connect, learn, and be involved
Even one small outing can shift your entire week.
🎶 Music That Brings Us Together
From Redgum to Yothu Yindi, the music throughout the show reflected the heart of the day:
- Stories of service
- Pride in identity
- And the shared experience of being Australian
Because sometimes… music says what words can’t.
💭 Carrying the ANZAC Spirit Forward
As the show came to a close, we reflected on what ANZAC Day truly represents:
- Service
- Sacrifice
- Courage
- And connection
But most importantly:
👉 It’s about people looking out for people.
And that’s something we can all carry forward —
in our workplaces, our families, and our communities.
❤️ Final Thought
Maybe building stronger communities isn’t about big programs or grand gestures.
Maybe it’s simply about this:
Showing up.
Checking in.
And standing alongside each other — just a little more.
