Building Stronger Communities – Episode 3 | SWR 99.9FM
Where everyone has a place… and every story matters.

There are moments in life where you feel connected…
even when you don’t know anyone around you.
Music playing.
People laughing.
Different cultures, all sharing the same space.
That’s the feeling we explored in this week’s episode of Building Stronger Communities.
🌏 More Than Just Festivals
Festivals aren’t just events.
They’re moments where community comes to life.
Across Western Sydney — in places like Blacktown, Fairfield and Cumberland — we see it every day:
- Families sharing food from their culture
- Children playing together without barriers
- Conversations between strangers
- Music that brings people into the same moment
For a short time… nothing else matters.
You don’t have to agree on everything.
You don’t have to be the same.
You just have to be part of it.
And maybe… that’s what unity really looks like.
🤝 When Unity Feels Challenging
This week also gave us a moment to reflect.
Hearing the response to the Welcome to Country at ANZAC services created conversation across our communities.
Not just about what happened…
but about how we respond to each other.
Because days like ANZAC Day are built on respect.
On reflection.
On standing together.
And even when views differ…
there’s something important about how we show that…
and how we continue to create spaces where people feel acknowledged and included.
🌿 Understanding Creates Connection
For many of us, understanding doesn’t always come straight away.
Sometimes it evolves.
The Welcome to Country is not about ownership…
It’s a gesture of respect.
A recognition of history…
of culture…
and of the people who have cared for this land for generations.
And when we take the time to learn…
to listen…
to see things through a different lens…
something shifts.
Not just in our thinking — but in how we connect.
🎉 Unity in Real Life
If you want to see unity in action… look at festivals.
People from different backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences
coming together in the same space.
Not because everything is the same…
but because something is shared.
A moment.
A meal.
A song.
A feeling.
And for that time…
there’s ease.
There’s belonging.
No pressure. No expectations.
Just people… together.
📍 Right Here in Western Sydney
The beauty of where we live is this:
You don’t have to travel far to experience the world.
Right here in our community, you’ll find:
- Diwali celebrations lighting up local parks
- Lunar New Year festivals full of colour and culture
- Community days where families share traditions, dance and stories
- Events through the Blacktown Festival bringing people together
These aren’t just things to watch.
They’re things you can be part of.
And in a world that can sometimes feel divided…
these moments matter more than ever.
🔌 Switch Off & Connect: Create Your Own Festival
This week’s Switch Off & Connect was simple:
Create your own mini festival moment.
It could be:
- A BBQ or picnic turned into a food festival
- Backyard games with a theme
- A family “stage” with music, dress-ups, and performances
No pressure. No expectations.
Just connection.
And maybe most importantly…
step away from the constant online searching.
Instead:
- Talk to the people around you
- Ask questions
- Learn from your elders
- Share stories
Because sometimes… the best ideas — and the strongest connections — come from real conversations.
💛 What This Means for Our Community
Unity doesn’t mean everyone thinks the same.
It doesn’t mean we always agree.
It means we take the time to:
- Listen
- Learn
- Respect
- And show up for each other
Even when it’s not easy.
💬 Final Thought
Unity isn’t something we wait for.
It’s something we create.
In small moments…
in shared spaces…
in simply choosing to be part of something together.
