🌱 Growing Community — One Plant at a Time

This week on Building Stronger Communities on SWR 99.9FM, we explored a simple but powerful idea:

Sometimes stronger communities begin with the smallest actions.

A conversation.
A shared moment.
A little more time outdoors.
Or even… planting something in the ground.

Hosted by Michelle Hillier alongside youth contributor Piper Johnston, Episode 4 invited listeners to slow down, reconnect, and reflect on the ways connection grows over time — just like a garden.

🌿 One Plant at a Time

The inspiration for this week’s show came from a visit to the local Nursery Open Days through Blacktown City Council.

Michelle shared her experience visiting the nursery for the very first time and collecting two plants — a succulent and a lavender plant.

But the experience became about much more than gardening.

It became a reminder that:

  • community can grow through small moments
  • slowing down matters
  • nature helps us reconnect
  • and young people play an important role in creating welcoming community spaces

A special mention was shared for Landon, a young person working at the nursery who welcomed and assisted visitors throughout the day — a small interaction that reflected the bigger message of the show:

“Stronger communities don’t always grow through huge gestures.
Sometimes they grow through very small moments of care… one plant at a time.”

Welcoming Piper as Our Youth Voice

Piper joins the program as the show’s youth voice, bringing thoughtful insight and lived experience through her involvement with:

  • Fortem Australia supporting first responder families
  • Youth leadership initiatives
  • Community and advocacy work

Throughout the episode, Piper reflected on:

  • connection across generations
  • what helps young people feel grounded
  • the importance of being present
  • and how small moments of support can make a real difference

Piper’s segment

During this week’s conversation, Piper Johnston shared an important youth perspective around climate change, community involvement, and why local connection matters.

Piper reflected that for many young people, climate change now feels closer and more real than ever before — but it can also feel overwhelming.

She spoke about how many young people see climate change as a burden they are expected to carry, particularly when there is often:

  • limited community involvement,
  • unclear information,
  • and a lack of accessible local statistics showing how issues directly affect younger generations.

Piper also highlighted that many young people currently see issues such as:

  • youth crime,
  • cost of living pressures,
  • and the housing crisis

as more immediate concerns, because they are likely to impact their lives sooner and more directly.

One of the strongest messages from Piper’s reflections was the importance of creating more opportunities for local involvement and awareness.

She shared that:

  • greater visibility within local government areas,
  • community activities,
  • school involvement,
  • and opportunities to meet like-minded people

would encourage stronger engagement from younger generations.

“Young people often prefer doing things together…
being part of something with other people who care.”

Her reflections aligned beautifully with the overall theme of the episode:

💬 Self-Care & Watering Your Own Garden

A major theme throughout the morning was the reminder that caring for others also means caring for ourselves.

Michelle reflected on the importance of:

  • slowing down
  • being fully present
  • putting phones away
  • creating memories
  • and intentionally making space for connection

One of the key reflections from the show was:

“You can’t support someone else’s garden… if you’re not watering your own.”

Listeners were encouraged to think about what helps them feel:

  • grounded
  • rested
  • connected
  • and more like themselves again

Because self-care doesn’t always need to be expensive or complicated.

Sometimes it’s found in:

  • nature
  • conversations
  • music
  • family time
  • or simply taking a moment to breathe.

❤️ Mother’s Day Reflections

As the show moved into Hour 2, the conversation shifted toward Mother’s Day weekend and the many forms care, nurturing, and guidance can take throughout our lives.

The episode acknowledged:

  • mums
  • grandmothers
  • aunties
  • carers
  • mentors
  • Elders
  • and the women who quietly help shape stronger communities every day

The conversation also reflected respectfully on:

  • grief and remembrance
  • people missing loved ones
  • the impact of family separation
  • and the importance of acknowledging the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the ongoing impact of the Stolen Generations.

Michelle shared a personal reflection about losing her mum at 23 years of age and the many incredible women who helped guide and support her throughout life.

“Nobody ever replaces your mother…
but there have been many incredible women throughout my life who have held that special space beside me.”

🔌 Switch Off & Connect – Mother’s Day Edition

This week’s Switch Off & Connect challenge was simple:

Show up.

Not with perfection.
Not with expensive gifts.
Just with presence.

Listeners were encouraged to:

  • cook a meal together
  • play a board game
  • go for a walk
  • sit around the table
  • watch a movie together
  • or simply spend uninterrupted time with someone they care about

Because often the greatest gift is simply connection.

PIPER MOTHER’S DAY REFLECTION

Piper was heartfelt when sharing how she would like to spend Mother’s Day by having her Mum share stories with her so she could find out things she wasn’t aware of.

🎵 Music That Carried the Morning

This week’s soundtrack reflected themes of:

  • weather
  • growth
  • resilience
  • love
  • remembrance
  • strength
  • and self-expression

Featuring artists including:

  • Pink & Willow Sage Hart
  • Prince
  • Bill Withers
  • Rihanna
  • Crowded House
  • Imagine Dragons
  • Taylor Swift
  • Madonna
  • Sister Sledge
  • Nelly Furtado
    …and more.

Each song helped carry the conversations and emotions woven throughout the morning.

🌱 Final Reflection

At the heart of Episode 4 was a reminder that connection rarely happens all at once.

It grows slowly.

Through:

  • kindness
  • consistency
  • listening
  • shared experiences
  • and small moments that make people feel seen and valued

Because communities grow the same way gardens do.

One plant at a time.

One conversation at a time.

One act of care at a time.
