Young People, Purpose & the Power of Community

This week on Building Stronger Communities, Michelle and Piper celebrated National Volunteer Week by recognising the people who quietly give their time, care, and energy to help strengthen communities across Western Sydney.

From community radio and sporting clubs to cultural organisations, fundraising events, emergency services, and local neighbourhood support, volunteers continue to play an essential role in helping people feel connected and supported.

Did you know that the people behind the scenes here at SWR — including many of our broadcasters — all volunteer their time?

From presenters…
to producers…
tech support…
music programming…
administration…
and community events…

people give their time simply because they care about community connection.

💛 Young People Are Looking for Purpose

One of the most meaningful conversations of the morning came during the Youth Voice segment with Piper, where the discussion focused on how young people view volunteering and why community involvement still matters deeply to younger generations.

Piper shared that many young people today have a genuine interest in volunteering — especially in areas connected to:

  • environmental programs
  • social justice initiatives
  • fundraising campaigns
  • community events
  • and causes that create meaningful change

For many young people, volunteering is about more than simply helping out. It’s about finding purpose, connection, belonging, and opportunities to develop real-world skills they can carry into everyday life, future careers, and relationships.

Programs that provide:

  • leadership opportunities
  • practical experience
  • teamwork and communication skills
  • community involvement
  • and the ability to make a visible difference

often resonate strongly with younger generations.

🌱 Balancing School, Life & Community

The conversation also acknowledged that school commitments, study pressures, and busy schedules can sometimes make volunteering difficult for young people.

However, despite those challenges, many still find ways to support their communities through sporting clubs, fundraising events, environmental projects, school initiatives, and local programs.

As Michelle reflected during the program:

“Sometimes we underestimate how much young people notice… but often they see kindness, inclusion and connection more clearly than anyone.”

📻 Powered by Volunteers

Throughout the morning, listeners also heard about the important role volunteers play at SWR 99.9FM, where presenters, producers, technical teams, event organisers, and behind-the-scenes volunteers all contribute to keeping community radio alive across Western Sydney.

The episode also highlighted the SWR fundraising raffle supporting upgrades to the station’s security systems and infrastructure — another reminder that community radio survives because communities choose to support it.

We heard from Jo a member and Volunteer of SWR for over 20 years. Jo shared her story of how she became a volunteer her administration role and how our listeners could enquire about volunteering.

🔌 Switch Off & Connect

“This week’s Switch Off & Connect challenge is simple…

💛 Thank a volunteer.

  • your local coach
  • community radio volunteer
  • SES volunteer
  • school helper
  • neighbour
  • or someone quietly helping others behind the scenes.

Volunteer at your local sporting team or get involved in an environmental program.

Piper encouraged listeners to take the next step toward connection:

Because sometimes building stronger communities starts with simply showing up and helping where you can.

WHATS HAPPENING THIS WEEK

National Reconciliation Week 2026 27th May to 3rd June

Reconciliation for many people my age has involved a lot of learning. Growing up, many of us were not taught much about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture, or experiences.

National Reconciliation Week gives us an opportunity to listen more deeply, reflect honestly, and strengthen relationships across our communities — because reconciliation benefits all Australians.

And sometimes, making a difference simply starts with being willing to have the conversation.

Next Week

And a huge thank you to our fellow SWR volunteers — the people behind the scenes who give their time, energy, and passion to keep community radio alive and connected to the people it serves. Community radio simply would not exist without volunteers.

And to all of our listeners, guests, volunteers, and supporters — thank you for being part of Building Stronger Communities

Next week, we’ll be exploring two powerful conversations that both centre around connection.

As Australia marks National Reconciliation Week, we’ll be talking about reconciliation, understanding, and the importance of strengthening relationships across our communities.

We’ll also be looking at the growing role dogs now play in wellbeing — from emotional support and companionship through to therapy, connection, and reducing social isolation.

Because whether it’s through culture, conversation, community… or even the bond between humans and animals… connection has the power to strengthen mental wellbeing..

Have a wonderful weekend…
and if you have opportunity this week…thank a volunteer.”
