🌿Connection Through Story Telling and Listening
This week’s Building Stronger Communities brought together conversations around reconciliation, storytelling, youth perspectives, and the powerful role connection plays in our wellbeing.
As Australia marked National Reconciliation Week, host Michelle Hillier reflected on her own learning journey and introduced a new community initiative called “What Australia Means to Me.”
The initiative invites people from all walks of life to share their stories, experiences, and reflections on what Australia means to them. The aim is not to find one answer, but to create space for many voices, perspectives, and conversations that help us better understand one another.
“Reconciliation isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being willing to listen, learn, and understand different lived experiences.”
🎙️ A Youth Perspective
Regular youth contributor Piper joined the program to share a younger generation’s perspective on reconciliation and community connection.
The discussion highlighted how many young Australians are engaging more openly with conversations about culture, identity, and belonging, while recognising the importance of learning from the past to help build a more inclusive future.
Piper also explored how younger generations view connection differently today, particularly through the role animals play in supporting wellbeing and reducing loneliness.
✍️ Finding Your Voice Through Storytelling
This week’s program also welcomed Catherine from Story Factory to discuss the organisation’s exciting work supporting young people through creative writing and storytelling.
With the recent opening of Story Factory’s new Bidwill centre, young people in Western Sydney now have access to free programs that help build literacy, confidence, creativity, and connection.

The conversation highlighted the importance of giving young people opportunities to share their stories, develop their voices, and discover the power of creative expression.
Storytelling has always played an important role in culture, identity, and community, and Story Factory is helping the next generation tell their own stories.
🐾 Connection Through Dogs
A major focus of the second hour was the role wellbeing dogs play in supporting connection across schools, workplaces, aged care settings, and communities.
Grant from Dogs Connect joined the program to share stories and insights from his work helping people experience the benefits of connection through dogs.

The discussion explored:🐾 The science behind human-animal connection🐾 The growing role of wellbeing dogs in schools🐾 How dogs help reduce stress and anxiety🐾 The changes seen in human-animal relationships following COVID🐾 The way dogs help people feel safe, connected, and included
One of the strongest themes from the conversation was that connection often begins with something very simple—a smile.
Many people may initially stand back and observe, but over time the presence of a dog often helps break down barriers, encouraging interaction, conversation, and participation.
🌿 Switch Off & Connect
This week’s Switch Off & Connect is inspired by both of today’s themes — reconciliation and the power of connection.
Take some time this week to slow down. Go for a walk. Take your dog if you have one, invite a friend, family member, neighbour, or simply spend some time in nature.
Leave your phone in your pocket. Listen more than you speak. Notice what’s around you.
And reflect on one simple question:
“What does Australia mean to me?”

Perhaps it’s family.
Perhaps it’s community.
Perhaps it’s opportunity.
Perhaps it’s culture, connection, and belonging.
There are no right or wrong answers. Sometimes understanding begins not by talking, but by listening. And sometimes the strongest connections are made when we simply take the time to be present.
This week, switch off from the distractions and connect with a person, a place, a pet, or your community. Because stronger communities begin with connection.

🌏 Celebrating Community Success
The program also congratulated Jessica Castro Chavez on recently being awarded the title of Mrs Earth Water 2026.
